Studio Gallery Intern Review

Juan Hernandez's "Dark City: Escalator" displays the cold and segregated reality of city life. The work depicts three figures riding an escalator during their daily commute. The figures stand rigidly with their eyes pointed sharply toward the ground in an attempt to avoid any contact with each other. A dim light from the top of the escalator allows only the impressions of their facial features to show through the shadows. The anonymity of the figures reflects the sad truth that in a city of so many people, social contact is so rare. Hernandez's use of dark colors and blurred images adds to the impersonality of the emotionless figures. "Dark City: Escalator" is one of two of Hernandez's "Dark City" works on display on the third floor of Studio Gallery, so please stop by and take a look.

The world calls to us, and as artists, we respond.

We have ways of creating, and each chooses the "way" according to our own sensitivities.

As an exercise in understanding, this group show by Studio Gallery artists has been arranged according to the way that we work and respond to the world.

The categories are: gesture, line, figure/ground relationships, the grid, organic and big forms, We welcome the public to view the variety and playfulness of 42 artists in this metropolitan area!

Mystical Landscapes at Gallery A

Green Tree in the Distance, oil on wood panel, 24"x42", 2008

During the month of October, Gallery A is featuring the work of Virginia artist Judith Judy. As you descend into the lower gallery space, you're enveloped in a sea of greens and yellows. This mystical world forces our imagination to look beyond the mist and haze, to contemplate what lies on the other side.
This exhibit is on view through October 31.
Hours are 11am-5pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
