Miso Susanowa at Split Screen

Visit Split Screen here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Beleza/74/201/1501 or direct link here: MisoSplitScreenHere.

Split Screen has two artists preparing their exhibits for August for the normally scheduled bi-monthly double artist large immersive installation Split Screen hosts. But in the interim, Miso Susanowa has her "Time As A Helix of Semi-Precious Stones" piece on the Split Screen platform for all to enjoy. " Set to Midnight, have particles to at least 4096 under Graphics, and turn local sounds on loud (not the music stream). You can sit on the build too!" Just my style.. art to play in! But for all you techys there is a lot more to it.

Miso's associated note relays some of the thought put into the installation. She presents as a Composition for Kandinsky saying, " Kandinsky saw houses and churches decorated with such shimmering colours that he said "...upon entering them I had the impression that I was moving into a painting." Music was also a critical influence on his painting and this piece has a soundtrack that plays with time. In Kandinsky’s work, some characteristics are obvious while certain touches are more discrete and veiled; they reveal themselves only progressively to those who make the effort to deepen their connection with his work.

Right-click to sit on the Mondrian grid and use your camera to look up, down and around the piece to enjoy the experience of Kandinsky's vision translated into 3D. Try all preset lightings.

You can get a mouselook view by pressing Esc twice. If you prefer an outside cam view and you get Mouselook on sitting, unsit, then use your cam controls to move your cam, then resit."

"The title is adapted from the Samuel R Delany story, "Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-precious Stones," a title which always has invoked for me a mystical, philosophic mood quite apart from the story itself; a kind-of abstract mantra guaranteed to put me in a reflective mood."

The note goes on to state...."I am fascinated at the computer's ability to make infinite shadings and tonals of color combined with translucency/reflection/transparency; a plastic fantastic palette."

While I was visiting and taking video someone (whom I wasn't fast enough to ask permission to quote) posed the question to Miso in the Split Screen group asking, "would it defy time if the direction of rotation of the panels was from the red to the green?
[16:34] Miso Susanowa: erm.... i am not in control of the particles/panels
[16:34] Miso Susanowa: the wind controls some; physics controls the rest
[16:34] Miso Susanowa: the particles are being sent out in rotating semi-random patterns, in the math
[16:35] visitor: oh
[16:35] Kara Trapdoor: I knew that
[16:35] Kara Trapdoor: : ) NOT
[16:35] Kara Trapdoor: Diviiiiii
[16:35] Dividni Shostakovich: ;-)
[16:35] Kara Trapdoor: hahaha
[16:35] Dividni Shostakovich: hi Kara!
[16:35] Kara Trapdoor: hey
[16:36] visitor: perhaps I chose a bad moment to look at its rotation
[16:36] Dividni Shostakovich: more likely a good moment, because it suggested things to you
[16:36] Miso Susanowa: the patterns used by the generators have different "shapes" to their dispersion
[16:36] Miso Susanowa: those dispersal patterns were then randomized by hand...
[16:37] Miso Susanowa: and then some few, interspersed, were made subject to wind
[16:37] Miso Susanowa: so any "patterns" that show up are basically coincidence
[16:39] visitor: well I like it
[16:39] Miso Susanowa: thanks!
[16:39] visitor: how long will it be here?
[16:39] Miso Susanowa: *points to Dividni* ask him
[16:39] Miso Susanowa: he's the honcho :)
[16:40] Dividni Shostakovich: actually I don't know -- it's officially an "interim" piece between the next two big builds, but if the artists there don't need the prims then "Helix" will stay up -- the last interim piece, Misprint Thursday's "Digital Glove," stayed up for three months
[16:41] Kara Trapdoor: beam me up scotty I want to see...
[17:07] Dividni Shostakovich: :-)
[17:07] Miso Susanowa: and I didn't want it in a giant black box... yet on the ground, the focus gets grabbed by seeing things through it
[17:07] Dividni Shostakovich: I'm glad you could put it up in full form here -- and I didn't even know!
[17:07] Miso Susanowa: this is how I made it
[17:08] Miso Susanowa: in IW I have it much much larger, and the trees are set on the mountains
[17:08] Miso Susanowa: as for the meteor
[17:08] Miso Susanowa: i dunno. I put it and took it out a half dozen times
[17:09] Miso Susanowa: it just seems to balance things
[17:09] Dividni Shostakovich: it's funny how those things work
[17:09] Dividni Shostakovich: i like it
[17:09] Miso Susanowa: to give a nice horizontal depth in a line with the grid and between the trees
[17:10] Miso Susanowa: a lot of elements in my work are not plotted
[17:10] Miso Susanowa: i am more a sculptor than builder
[17:10] Miso Susanowa: as I work, my hands do things and then i try to listen to what they are telling me
[17:11] Miso Susanowa: then perhaps I assemble an "overview" of the piece... but it is the making of it that informs me
[17:11] Miso Susanowa: my hands know things I don't

Well I just thought those were cool quotes from the maker of the exhibit since the first part was way over my head, as indicated by my interjections : ) and the last provides some insight into the artist. Check out this cool fun exhibit and keep your landmarks for Split Screen that seems to be hosting some of the best artists SL has to offer since opening.

Miso made a machinima of this too.. and you can check it out on Divi's blog here:http://dividni.blogspot.com/ or direct link here: DiviMisoHere.

Split Screen June Installation-Eliza Wierwight, Douglas Story and Desdemona Enfield Exhibits

July '11: Article by Kara Trapdoor, Photographer Kara Trapdoor - Split Screen Opening
Hurry over to Split Screen, as there is only a week left for the two June exhibits: "D. Construct" exhibit by Douglas Story and Desdemona Enfield and "FlowerDrum" by Eliza Wierwight. Eliza's "FlowerDrum" provides the visitor vignettes of the Orient in her life. "D. Construct" is housed inside a dark ball and instructions let visitors know to click on one of the many small famous paintings on the wall. Once this is done a large replica shows on the wall. The sign guides visitors through clicking the large picture again to see it basically fall apart in color disc pieces to a pile on the ground, and subsequent clicks cause the discs to fly back up creating a moving colorful light show experience prior to the original picture being reconstructed. Visitors are encouraged to play on the art. Media is used in Split Screen exhibits.

My friend, Dividni Shostakovich who is curator, states, "The Split Screen Installation Space is place where artists and builders develop and exhibit large installations. Two artists use the space for two months, and then other artists take over. The space is meant for large builds that utilize the possibilities of Second Life as an artistic or immersive medium, such as works that are impossible in real life."

UWA 3D Open Art Challenge Plus "Angry Gods" by FreeWee Ling

UWA
(The opening portal)

The UWA (University of Western Australia) 3d challenge is in full voting swing-see below for more info. But also at the UWA Virlantis sim is an exhibit by FreeWee Ling called, "Angry Gods- An Apocalyptic Vision". I wanted to see this before work today so popped over with the intent of a run through to see if it warranted blogging or further exploring later, and it did. My only disappointment was that in my limited morning time I soon discovered my photos were not saved properly. When taking shots, they appeared fine on my monitor but in the computer they lost details, so I resorted to some screen shots just for the blog today. I will work on photos later, but after reading the instructional note card for the exhibit perhaps the way it is made has something to do with the way the graphics photograph. It was recommended to basically turn everything max. I did this and it was pretty much a WOW! factor. Things were larger than life with lots of fire, and colors and scenery and stuff. So after reading the note and trying to get a few shots I gave up on following the story around the area for lack of time. I could see it was going to be a bit of a journey so I will go back later, but leave the info. I did get here today.

(These are HUGE.. just saying)

Some of the instructions stated:.."These instructions are essential for fully appreciating the experience you are about to have. ..use the maximum graphics settings...widen your camera view. Set your draw distance to AT LEAST 256 meters. There are a number of scenic overlooks here. Set particles to the maximum your computer can handle. Turn up Sounds. The music stream is optional. There is no media stream..."
"THE STORY:
CAUTION!!! Things fall from the sky and other things may not be as stable as they appear.
It’s the end of the world.
This is not a maze.
There are no choices here.
Your fate is sealed.
You cannot turn back.
Follow the path.
Do not deviate.
If you get stuck or lost, deal with it.
It will do you no good to complain.
Keep your head up.
Look ahead and above, often.
Watch the sky.
Be prepared to run or take cover.
..-FreeWee Ling"

(O, yeah.. I deviated from the path as usual)

LEA Avatar Games-YES! I Did It!!!

Avatar Games_004

The stage was set and the sim was full. Crap Mariner (http://firstlife.isfullofcrap.com/) and Honour McMillan (http://honour-mcmillan.blogspot.com/) provided the colour commentary for the show similar to the two grumpy old men in the Muppet Show and Bryn Oh (http://brynoh.blogspot.com/2011/05/avatar-games.html) was host or something like that while ColeMarie Soleil (http://justexploringart.blogspot.com/2011/05/lea-avatar-games.html or http://colemariesoleil.wordpress.com/) tended to us targets, I mean contestants.

Yesterday, 6-13-11 was the 2nd week for the Linden Lab Endowment for the Arts Avatar Games in Second Life. I was asked to participate last week for the opening of the games, but I had a RL conflict but I knew when I first read about this that I wanted to participate so last night I had my chance. Yesterday I hurried home from work to tp into the contestant holding area which was like a elevator placed on a cloud in the sky where we, the runners for the day, stood or sat around chatting while one by one we were tp'd down individually to take our turn. Elevator music played as we tried to cam down below to watch our fellow runners, only having to resort to using the mini-map to get an idea of how they were doing since we were too high to see the course. A fellow runner advised me to just jump over the water area they refer to as the swamp or cesspool or something of that nature rather than trying to run across the tiny bone bridge-like area that I THINK was designed for crossing. I participated as a fairy but wondered if I would regret that as the audience and I guess Bryn Oh, Crap Mariner and Honour shot their guns as us to slow us down. Fairy wings are large and not so aerodynamic if they can't be used for flying which I was told would be cheating to try to fly. It was suggested but not mandatory to have an interesting looking av, and you know that SL art group.. an interesting looking lot to say the least. Some of my fellow runners included a pine tree looking avatar as she said she felt that would be the best camouflage, one was a pig--a fast pig, and I heard they had some very cool looking contestants the week prior. Colemarie kept us good company and tp'd us down in turns.

I patiently waited my turn seeing my fellow runners return pretty quickly complaining of being hit in the face with giant balls, etc and I really had no idea what to expect since I couldn't' attend the first week. We were supposed to get to watch after our turn was done but the audience/shooting gallery sim side was full so we didn't have that opportunity. Apparently this is as much fun to watch and shoot at the runners as it is to try to run the course. Finally it was my turn. I was tp'd to the starting area standing under the big light when suddenly the start light went from red to green and I tried to run. Now, I don't know if it was lag, nerves, my non-aerodynamic wings or what that slowed me down, or maybe just trying to see what was ahead of me, but I felt like I was walking through mud. Suddenly I was thrown high up into the sky only to land, take a few steps and be tossed into the air again. I still don't know if that was because I was shot or if there was something I stepped on that did that. When I landed I took off trying to run.. and got to the edge of the land before the river/waterway. I jumped as my fellow runner suggest and landed just short of the other side and sunk right to the bottom of the water. So I jumped again and sailed up into the sky only to end up almost eye to eye with Bryn Oh who was manning some sort of platform a little above the course.. I don't know if Bryn was shooting too but I didn't hang around to find out. I forced myself down as quickly as possible and continued on the course that weaved up and around zig zagging a course up a hill. Along the way I was caged.. twice, tried to avoid larger than human size giant marbles rolling down the hill at me, and then there was the wall. The wall blocked the entire path and later I was told those moving blocks underneath me that seemed to just be an annoyance at the time somehow was to make a ladder to so one could walk OVER the wall... whatever, I just walked walked right up the wall a couple times in the corner enough to get a little better momentum by walking up the side mountain wall then made my way over that darn wall. I don't know how much jumping is allowed but in retrospect a giant jump like I did to get out of the water would have worked great here I think. Anyway.. I did eventually make it to the finish, took my place in the spotlight, made a large bow toward the audience and was tp'd back to the elevator.

In the end we tp'd down to check the stat walls and I found my time was 5th best out of the 7 runners for the day. It was also good enough to keep me on the other chart for season's best scores, but since I'm at the bottom of that I'm sure I'll be off that by next week. I know if I knew what to expect I could have done it faster and I'm waiting to see if I can take another turn later in the season if they have space to improve my time. Last week had some much slower times even up to almost 6 minutes, so I really think the times will improve as spectators become participants and being to know what to expect. But having said that I think one of the runners from this week, Zev Titanium, will be very hard to beat. I don't know HOW he made it through so fast. At any rate I picked up a free blaster gun and tried it out. I'll be ready to watch and shoot from the stands now. If you want to sign up to play go to the LL Endowment for the Arts site and fill in an application. There is a lot more information there, on Bryn oh's blog and also on Honour's blog. There is even a very funny trailer about a contestants strategy.. check it out. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:LEA_Avatar_Art_Games or sign up here AvatarGamesSignUpHere.

The info. on site states:
"The show Visualizing Theorem features sixteen installations which are based on the science and math theories explored in the album Theorem produced by Ulf Skogsbergh. The album Theorem is a result of an online collaboration between ten musicians on Indaba Music.

In the exhibit 16 art works are presented ranging from performance, to detailed steam punk style machines, interactive work, and minimal conceptual work. Each of the contributing artists selected a track from the album Theorem to work from as their inspiration. The theories range from spacetime, to special relativity, to genetic theory as well as some philosophy and computer programming ideas.

The visitors can view the art and also play the related music or soundscapes in world while hopping site to site through the fully functioning university sim of UTSA.

Originalia Opening Today, 2-27-11 at 3pm SLT

red hot chili pipers_015

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Piper%20Point/46/45/27 or direct link here: OriginaliaHere. This is the starting point of a wonderful artistic adventure that will hold a grand opening today 2-27-11 at 3pm slt. My friend, Scottius Polke, gave me an invite so I showed up early to take some pics and to be able to blog it before the opening. It is as impressive as I was hoping based on some of his past works I've seen. The note card explains and says it all best so I will just quote it here. Be sure to visit for a great time and amazing artistic display.

"Opening of Originalia, Amase Levasseur's sim, dedicated to art in SL
New Installations by Em Larsson, Scottius Polke, RAG Randt & Eliza Wierwight

Time: Sunday February 27th 3 pm slt. Please not sim is not open until Sunday

Originalia, Amase Levasseur's sim dedicated to art in SL, will have its grand opening on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 3 pm SLT. The debut exhibit, Reverie, features new installations by Em Larsson, Scottius Polke, RAG Randt and Eliza Wierwight.

Reverie begins in the gallery with RAG Randt's new show "Doggie Dreams." RAG's new work started from an unpublished children's book he wrote called The ABCs of AL. RAG submitted the completed manuscript and drawings to numerous publishers to no avail. The book went into the archives.

RAG says, "I thought it would be a fun exercise to deconstruct the characters and drawings from the book into new Second Life 3D constructions. The result is a series of art boxes incorporating RL and SL textures, scripting and particles proving that there is life after RL rejection!" To view the book please go to: http://www.ragmedia.com/abcs_of_al.pdf

Across the bridge in front of the gallery, Em Larsson has created an art walk amid the island's tropical plants. In "Temporal Dreams," Em says "I decided to layer several images of varying opacities to create a feeling of unreality, images that represent that trance-like state we may find ourselves in when we dream. Asleep, our minds may blend odd elements, some mundane and some fantastical in a strange and implausible mélange that we somehow still manage to credit."

As you cross the bridge to begin your stroll through the installation, be sure to set your viewer to midnight. As you follow the stepping-stones, images will gradually appear out of the mist before you. Be sure to stand on the one that glows to be able to see most clearly. Sweet dreams!

From a midnight stroll through the garden to the blue dome, "The Docks." This latest build by Scottius Polke, creator of mushROOM and Lunamaruna, is a quarter sim build which once again is entirely created using his own illustrations and drawings. Scottius amazes us yet again by creating a new and entirely different mood from his past two builds using a color palette that is more muted, yet strongly makes the observer feel like they are stepping into an uneasy dream, a different reality.

Eliza Wierwight muses once again with "Aria," a whimsical nocturne engraved with all the aesthetic & charm of the River Styx." She states, "I don't have the answers. I don't write essays. I create what I love. It's instinctual."

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Amase Levasseur or amase.levass@gmail.com, or any of the artists"

Kolor Studio 2011-Grand opening show tonight

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kolor/35/126/51 or direct link here KolorHere.

Kolor Fall is at it again with a whole new set up in his sim and this time it's multi- level and takes a while to see it all because it is very large, interactive, and so impressive you want to see it all and absorb it. This is 4 levels of fun. No wonder I haven't been seeing him around or hearing from him lately, he must have been very busy. A ground level hosts Blue Angel, Pete's Dive a lounge, there is a underwater level with much glowing sea life by Glyph Graves and art, there is a level with lights and colors all over the place and in one section there is a grouping of Kolor's RL art but it is interactive. I was so pleased to have one of his works slowly begin to float blocks of it out in the air out and around me when I clicked on it. There is a grand opening tonight at 6SLT. Be sure to click everything as many of the works of art hold gifts and surprises.

A lot will be happening in the Kolor Studio in 2011, we have just completed a two sim wide build, but that's just the start of things

Main Level:
Kolor Install's, Glyph Graves Underwater Area, Puddles of Light Sim
Most things are interactive at this level. Back by popular demand, the Dance Cubes - just sit on them, height controller is a pink stick.
To Draw, just mouse click over the paintings.
Who Knows what the other stuff does(and some things even give gifts when u click on them).

Puddles of Light Install - new 2011 Sim Wide "Art Game"
Also on the main level, but a Sim level interactive piece.
Fly into the "puddle movers" to modify the land -
Walk next to puddle light to start building structure -
Puddles is a interactive piece, run by differential equations that simulate life and neural networks, that interact with avatars.
The ground (which is modifiable), defines a chaotic field which the equations play with (moving puddles light).
The structure that moves up into the sky, slowly changes over days, as people play with the light.
[note there is a 6 avatar limit in that sim, due to performance reasons]
you can view where the puddles are going ... by looking over the waterfall's from the main sim.

Lounge
Sim wide Structure & benches by Scarp Godenought with my collection of White Lebed's Sculptures (I have most of her major pieces that cover this level of the sim).

Blue Angel Poet's Dive
Poetry group meets every sunday at 5 pm. Park and install done by various artists (Hyapatia Pickens, Taylor Danick, Kolor ).
Park and Blue Angel Building Done by Nickola Martynov and Nestra Careless"

SL7B-Happy Birthday SL/Censorship Issues Abound!

Happy Birthday

SL7B is officially open as of Monday and I was fortunate enough to see some of the opening day events, between crashes that is. Apparently half of Second Life wanted to see Phillip Linden's opening speech so that proved to be a bit difficult for my computer, but I did get to see some of it. The SL7B theme is Unexpected Collaborations (see my prior post on this).
Dates to remember:
-June 21—10:00 a.m. SLT: Gates open to the public for the opening ceremonies.
-June 23—The Birthday!
-June 26—Official closing ceremony.
-June 27—Last day of entertainment.
-July 3—Gates close.
Check it out here: SL7BHere.

Censored
This year there is quite a bit of controversy with SL7B around the content they allowed or more specifically didn't allow to present. Apparently one well known and loved talented artist, rose Borchovski, was denied the opportunity to present her art installation: She states, "My Susa Bubble Installation : The Kiss has been returned to me from the SL7B sims where Linden is celebrating Secondlife. I quote “The images on your build are in violation of our general rating, to be clear: Nudity is not allowed at art events with a general maturity rating.”

While the content is "artistic nude" and not pornography, Linden Labs clearly followed it's terms of service in denying this. A large part of The SL artistic community is in a uproar over this rejection responding with protests, responses and a petition to LL regarding this issue. It seems many people I speak to have feelings one way or the other on this. There even seems to be a bit of spill over in other forums about censorship.

World Expo-SL Machinima, Art & Sims Featured

The 2010 World Expo runs May 1 through October 31st in Shanghai, China (real life) this year. Expo. The Expo hosts over 250 countries and expects 70-100 million guests.

The SL group, "Open This End", was selected to be a part of this event. I have been made aware of numerous SL sims, art and machinima participating and will try to show and list some of what I have seen here. I'm told Aino Baar, a first life curator, has been instrumental along with Bryn Oh in this venture. The expo showcases SL machinima on five 4 metre wide monitors on the "air tree" structure at the Madrid Pavillion. Bryn Oh has been given 5 sims by Linden Labs to showcase SL art. Some of SL's leading artists have been asked to participate creating unique sims echoing a traditional chinese folk story "The Whisper Tree". The tree is the central theme to each sim.(credit: Kazuhiro Aridian) Some of the artists involved include Bryn Oh, Glyph Graves, Marcus Inkpen, Colemarie Soleil, Soror Nishi, Azuhiro Ardian, and Desdemona Enfield. Sl residents are also invited to get involved by submitting machinima of the five islands.

Each island will be missing something. Island one is missing love and joy. Island two energy, three colour, four sound and five light. When an avatar whispers to a tree within each sim it grants a wish. The wish is to return that which was missing.

Island one (no love/emotion)= UtopiaNoLove. This sim by Bryn Oh has unique structures that I had a difficult time capturing all together in one shot, as it is set with specific windlight and spread out a bit. It's a great disply with moving parts, and the first thing I did when visiting this sim is to fly into a big ball that shattered upon impact only to rejuvinate itself for the next of many victims I watched do the same. The tower structure has the dropping balls in true Bryn Oh style and the tree is the central focal point as it is in all 5 sims. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Utopia01/124/99/29

Sim One, No Love

Island two (no energy)= UtopiaEntrophy. My friend Glyph Graves gave me information about his contribution to his sim, Entropy, Island two. The main thing to emphasize about his is that you absolutely have to experience it first hand to fully appreciate the complexity and beauty of it. True to his form, the sim is interactive and when visiting be sure to read the notecard provided to learn simply how to cause the statues to fragment, color change, flex and float around for a very surreal experience. He even has more excitment planned for this sim, so I intend to keep my eye on this one. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Utopia02/145/101/25

Sim Two, NO Energy

Island three (no colour)= UtopiaNoColor. Another of Bryn Oh's additions with Soror Nishi is an interesting sim I have seen pictures of popping up around flickr and youtube machinima for a little while now. The old time background music emitting from an old floating tv lends a nice touch to this interesting sim, but when further from the tv, I only heard the humming of machine type noise. I tried to use Bryn's windlight presets again, but these are best for visiting or close ups really and don't seem to lend to full sim pics. The sim includes the Vessles Dream web link. This sim is best known for it's shopping cart pile up surrounded by crows, but while I sat in the top cart, as everyone does, the pile suddenly changed and I was sitting in a beautiful tree, only to see it later chang back to the shopping carts again. Maybe someone else whispered to the tree. A fun sim. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Utopia03/138/126/31

Sim Three, No Colour

Island four (no sound)= UtopiaNoSound. A sim I visited last night, and posted several pictures to my flickr, is Utopia, No Sound, by Marcus Inkpen. This is a very impressive sim with two primary structures with lots of uniquely designed rooms, texture and style and I hope you can get a little bit of an idea of this from my pictures. This amazing sim is an explorer and photographer's dream. Be sure to check it out. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Utopia04/128/128/21

Sim Four, No Sound

Island five (no light)= UtopiaNoLight. The last in the series I visited for the first time today and is also by Bryn Oh. The central tree in this sim is covered in lights. At first glance it appears to be the smallest and least detailed of the five sims, but I was plesantly surprised to find many small items of interest upon further exploration. When visiting be sure not to miss any of the tiny details around. While there I even ran in to Colemarie one of the above mentioned artists. href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Utopia05/131/132/21
